Airline Stocks, and that has prompted many to wonder if there is
perhaps a potential investment play here, as these companies are
trading at all time lows. The answer to this question is; don't get
too high on the airline sector just yet. Let me explain.
At the 2009 Paris Airshow, both Airbus and Boeing did rather bad, as
no major-airlines were buying airliners. Boeing sold a couple of
737-800s to Mitsubishi Corporation, but realize those were probably
only to get personnel back and forth from all their major industrial
projects, like the lithium mines in Bolivia or the clean coal
generation station in Australia. But there were few airline-industry
aircraft buyers.
And even if Boeing says that there is a $3.2 Trillion market in the
next 2-decades for commercial aircraft, that figure hardly addresses
the problems right now. Boeing is having a tough time selling its
ultra-light, very efficient 787s, a state of the art aircraft that can
help the air lines with the fuel prices. Problem is no one is lending
money, the price is steep, and there is not an air line that has any
cash reserves they are willing to risk today.
Most analysts predict that the air lines in the US will create losses
in excess of 10 Billion Dollars in 2009, this means more bankruptcies,
some consolidations, lots of layoffs, and none of that noise, and
turbulence is going to raise shareholder's equity. Additionally, oil
barrel prices are back above $70 now and jet fuel is going to be
getting even more expensive.
Now some longer term projections look okay, such as once the recession
ends it is expected that passenger traffic will climb back up in
altitude to about 5% per year for a decade or so. But right now we
just had an Airbus break apart in mid-air killing everyone, and that
does not help passenger traffic. Thus, maybe you should hold off for
now on airline stocks, but keep an eye on them, just over the
horizon.
